If you think you might be suffering from cataracts, you’re not alone.
Cataracts affect nearly 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 80, more than half of all Americans have cataracts.
Although cataracts can happen at any age, they generally form in the eye of someone who is older than 40. The lens of your eye is made up of water and protein. As you age, the protein in your eye will start to bunch together to form a mass. When the mass increases in size, it begins to inhibit your vision. Light must pass through this protein clump, which can cause a yellowish tinge on everything you see. If left untreated, cataracts can blind a person.
The symptoms of cataracts can also indicate other eye problems. These symptoms include blurred or cloudy vision, dull or faded colors, glare of sunlight, poor night vision, ghost images or multiple images in the affected eye, and sun-bursting or glares around lights such as headlights or streetlights. If you have any of these symptoms, please make an appointment with us for a complete eye examination.
Age may not be the only factor in the formation of cataracts. There are several additional factors that can contribute to the formation of cataracts. The most common include:
- Long-term exposure to sun and ultraviolet light
- Diabetes
- Smoking
Other less common risk factors also include:
- Alcohol abuse
- Eye injuries
- Exposure to radiation
- Genetic factors (parent/grandparent who had cataracts)
- Hypertension
The good news is that cataracts are treatable in almost all cases. With the care of a skilled surgeon, your cataracts can be removed and your vision restored. The great news is that cataracts, once removed, will not return. In addition, with the advent of new intraocular lens technology both distance and near vision can be corrected simultaneously, giving cataract patients a new glasses free way of life.
