If the cataract is deemed severe enough, its removal is seen as a medical necessity since it can cause blindness. This means that the surgery and standard monofocal intraocular lenses (IOL) will be covered by Medicare and most health insurance plans. A monofocal IOL will improve distance vision, but you will need glasses or contacts to see mid-range and close up.
Lenses that are referred to as Premium Lenses (or Intraocular Lenses, IOLs) are often chosen by our patients for this surgical procedure. If the patient chooses to upgrade from a Monofocal IOL to a Multifocal, Accommodating, or a Toric IOL, there will be an additional cost for the upgraded premium lens. These high-technology lenses are considered a luxury by Medicare and insurance companies and are not covered at this time. We provide financing options for our patients who choose premium lenses to correct existing refractive errors.
