Glaucoma: Symptoms & Risk Factors
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that damages the optic nerve, often due to high intraocular pressure (IOP). It is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, and because it develops slowly and without symptoms in its early stages, many people don’t realize they have it until significant vision loss occurs.
Early Signs and Symptoms
Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because most forms do not show symptoms until vision loss has already occurred. However, depending on the type, you may experience:
- Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision – one of the earliest signs
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Halos around lights
- Severe eye pain and headaches (common in acute glaucoma cases)
- Sudden vision loss (in advanced or acute cases)
Since it can cause permanent blindness, early detection through routine eye exams is crucial. If you are over 40 or have a family history of glaucoma, we strongly recommend scheduling a comprehensive screening in Pembroke Pines, FL, at MedEye Associates.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Glaucoma develops when fluid builds up in the eye, leading to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) that damages the optic nerve. The 3 types include:
- Primary Open-Angle – The most common type, developing slowly over time with no early symptoms.
- Angle-Closure – A sudden increase in eye pressure that can cause severe pain and rapid vision loss (a medical emergency).
- Primary Congenital – Present at birth and diagnosed within the first few years of life.
Who Is at Risk?
Certain factors can increase your risk, including:
🔹 Age: People over 40, with risk increasing significantly after 60
🔹 Family History: A strong genetic link makes glaucoma more likely
🔹 Race/Ethnicity: African Americans, Hispanics and Asians have a higher risk
🔹 Medical Conditions: Diabetes, hypertension and heart disease
🔹 High Eye Pressure (IOP): One of the biggest risk factors for optic nerve damage
